Tess Owens is enjoying a beach party thrown by her best friend, Rachel Price, and Rachel’s partners. Many of the people Rachel works with on the Jacksonville Rays National Hockey League team are also in attendance and playing soccer on the beach. Though Tess wants to flirt with many of the hockey players, she knows they are all off-limits, as Rachel is a doctor for the team and is already trying to hide her own polyamorous relationship with two team members and the equipment manager (a story that makes up the plot of the first novel in the series, Pucking Around).

Tess is leaving town shortly, so she changes out of her sandy beach clothes, but as she does, she is spotted naked by one of the hockey players, Ryan Langley. To stop staring at Tess, Ryan closes his eyes and walks face-first into a wall, giving himself a nosebleed. Tess helps him clean up and afterward demands a secret from him in exchange for seeing her naked. Ryan admits that he wants to kiss Tess, whom he has been staring at all day and whom he believes to be his dream girl.
